I once saw an episode in River Monsters that featured piranhas and boy, can they tear flesh. The host, Jeremy Wade, tested out the myth that piranhas can devour an animal in mere seconds by submerging a duck into the infested waters. PETA folks, don't fret, the duck was already dead.
At first, the myth seemed to be just that, a myth, the duck viewed from above appears intact. However, when he lifted it out of the water to look closely? What he thought was the duck was just a bunch of skin and feathers, the part submerged under water was gone. Confirmed = 1, Busted = 0.
Now, what happened to the host when he went into a pool full of starved piranhas? Nothing. Apparently, the piranhas will only attack if they smell blood. When they do, a feeding frenzy would ensue and when it does, well, you're pretty much f*cked up.
Forgot to mention, piranhas are also easily excited, so I don't recommend dancing the polka when around them. ;)
