We humans have a very limited capacity in picturing large numbers.  An average person is capped at imagining thousands.. tens of thousands for the gifted ones.. hundreds of thousands, maybe Stephen Hawking. Approach the million mark and it becomes blurry.  But a billion?  Forget it.  Case in point, can you really comprehend how big a billion is?  Yes? No?  Then consider this, if you start counting from 0 and a number for every second, it would take you 31.7 years to reach a billion.

Now how about Bill Gate's worth in money.  That's 50 billion.. actually it's 77 billion now give or take a few millions.  How would you picture that?  Staggering would be an understatement.  Even Jackie Chan is confused.  Lucky for us, Neil deGrasse Tyson's here to save the day.

We all know the story, It's all fun and games until that little slip.. and BOOM! Or more appropriately, SPLAT!  Stupid?  No doubt.  Dangerous?  Absolutely.  But you gotta admit, what they're doing is just awe-inspiring.  I'm literally holding my breath as I watch them do their stunts.  Just when I thought I've seen it all when it comes to climbing towers without safety harnesses then these guys, these guys just take it to a whole new level. Insanity.  At this rate, I hazard their life expectancy wouldn't be very long. Not that they care anyway.

So That's How Big the Universe Is

My calculations were off by a parsec but it was pretty close.

I've always been fascinated by the cosmos and its incomprehensible scale. It's such a fascination that if I meet God and he tells me that I can have one wish, my wish would be to "actually see" the universe in its entirety. That'd be awesome.

My kids are fascinated too. They love it when I talk to them about stars that are bigger than the sun. I love how they listen with eyes wide open as I show them how big the sun would be (beachball) if the earth would be the size of a pepper corn and just how small the sun would be (smaller than a dot) if it were compared to the biggest star (beachball) known to men. So this page is just a sweet sweet visual aide that I could show to them. To top it off, the scale even shows dinosaurs! How neat is that huh?

Cosplay Costumes for Less than 2 Dollars

They're so terrible they are awesome.

Cosplay costumes can be very expensive.  I got to know this when I asked for the price of an Akatsuki jacket a couple of years back - no, I'm not into cosplaying and was not planning to use this on such, just wanted to own one for daily use (worse?) - I had to pick my jaw from the ground when the lady told me it was for $70.  The good lady upon seeing my reaction said that they were genuine high-quality ones, not some cheap knockoffs.  Well she's right, they were indeed not cheap.  Needless to say, I left that store without the jacket and my pocket not $70 poorer. 

Now if you love cosplaying and don't want to spend tens of dollars for a costume piece then perhaps you should take a page from this guy's book.  His name is Anucha Saenghcart and his costume creations are able to capture the essence of the character using nothing but stuff you see around your house.  You know, like brooms and flour.  Creativity level 99.

Three words - you're in deep sh*t.

Wait, that's four.  But that don't matter, you're about to see a guy, possibly an animal trainer, a zookeeper, a masochist - I don't know, your guess is as good as mine - having his head get stuck inside the mouth of a lion. The question is, how the hell do you get yourself into such situation?  And more importantly, how do you get yourself out of such situation?  Resorting to aggression would certainly be a bad idea.  Reason out with her, get to her good side?

The lioness certainly does not look like she's letting go anytime soon.   I think she misses the taste of fresh meat.

Sabi Sand Lion Wars

The end of Africa's most infamous pride.

If you have been watching nature documentary channels, chances are you have heard of a group of 6 nomadic male lions, dubbed the Mapogo Coalition, that took control of the vast Sabi Sand Game Reserve in Africa in 2006.  These lions are considered legendary in their conquest of the Sabi Sand for many reasons but mainly for their notoriety.  You see during a pride takeover, male lions kill off other male lions, females that resist, and the cubs, to make sure that the pride members from thereon would be from the invader's bloodline. This is their normal behavior.  The Mapogo brothers however pushes it up a notch, not only they would kill, but they would also regularly eat them, quite unheard of really in the world of lions.  Two of the dominant males of the coalition named Mr. T and Kinky Tail separated from the group and established their sub-territory within the game reserve.. A bad move since there are a number of nomad males that are also vying for control.

The videos after the jump show the two brothers successfully defending their territory, albeit for the last time from another nomadic group, The Majingilanes.  The two were able to kill off one invader that got isolated from his group.  Later that day however, four of the Majingilanes strike back, Kinky Tail, alone but undeterred, charged at them.  Not exactly a fair battle but that's how it is.  TIA bru.

A pillar of light, that is.

This video, taken by YouTube user, Shinji Kawamura, could easily be seen as several things.  The first impression it made to me is that of a portal to another dimension or to a parallel universe.  It could also be the pillar of fire that guided the Israelites in the book of Exodus. Or the beam of light that beamed down Mr. Bean or Mr. Spock.  However you wish to see it, there is one thing that is sure, and that is I'm hungry.  So while I grab myself a snack, why don't you go ahead and watch the calming light after the jump.

This one is like that, only not as funny and several times scarier.  There is no panic-induced girly voice from the driver, nothing of that sort.  Instead, you get a controlled, manly, NOOOOOO!!!!  Because he is Russian and Russia does not tolerate effeminate behavior for Russian men.  No sir.  I'm sure he'd get into trouble with the law if he as much as screamed like the guy in the first post.   But girly-scream or not, I bet he needed to change his pants after that.

Sniper vs Iraqi Militia Machine Gunner

Hell yeah! With 5,000 machine gun rounds I will!

Here's a video of an Iraqi Militia trying to take out a sniper with guns a blazing ala commando style, like Jessie Ventura in Predator only less sexual tyrannosaurus-sy.  Several obvious things can be deduced while watching the video -  1.  He does not know where the sniper really is, 2.  He does not know that snipers can take out targets under cover more so if you are not , 3.  He thinks that snipers are bad shots, 4.  He thinks that firing at random targets will scare the sniper into showing himself and thereby allowing him to shoot said sniper, 5.  He believes it is a game of numbers.  Boy, is he in for a surprise.

When you're at this level of competence, anything can happen.

Like throwing the pin and holding onto the grenade is one. To be fair, it might not be the pin and the grenade thing but how do you train someone like this guy? I know, have him trained by R. Lee Ermey himself. The guy will surely straighten up under the lovable tutelage of Gunnery Sergeant Hartman,  Full Metal Jacket style.

Yes, it is neat indeed.  Well, Game of Thrones is in the air, come April and I could finally begin living in Westeros again.  I've actually stopped reading the books coz I no longer want to ruin the experience by nitpicking on details that were omitted and/or changed.  Just like the Red Wedding, for those who have not read the book, that was a real shocker, but for those of us who have.. to me at least, such event has been eclipsed by details, details.

A Dot Matrix Printer's Rendition of Eye of the Tiger

Here's something you don't see everyday, a dot matrix printer.  But you know what's something you don't see more of everyday than a dot matrix printer?  A singing dot-matrix printer!  Yes, sir.  This is a video of a printer with its own rendition of Eye of the Tiger.   It's not the full song co'z you know doing so might blow the printer's head but it's still awesome.  Oh and I should go back from my word, this guy's genius level is genius^9, which means you can't get more genius than that.  If you do you'd divide by zero.

Let There Be Distilled Water

But before that, I'd need some saltwater, sunlight, and the mushroom-guy-from-mario-bros-looking-pot above.

That funky pot, dubbed Eliodomestico, by Italian designer Gabrile Diamanti is a solar-powered water distiller that can provide 5 liters of distilled water in one sunny day.  You just put some water in (not necessarily drinkable), leave it under the sun, and you're set.  Great news for developing countries.

What's remarkable is that Gabrile Diamanti had the designs open for everyone to use.  It's an open project, so yes, he's not patenting it.  Awesome guy. What's even more remarkable is that you can start a salt business as a by-product of the distilling process.  It's a win-win situation.
